Sarah Cleveland

Sarah Cleveland is the Louis Henkin Professor of Human and Constitutional Rights, and the faculty Co- Director of the Human Rights Institute, at Columbia Law School.
She is a noted expert in the areas of human rights, national security, international law and U.S. foreign relations. She is a commissioner with the International Commission of Jurists and served as the Vice Chair of the UN Human Rights Committee and as the U.S. Independent Expert to the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. From 2009 to 2011, Professor Cleveland was Counselor on International Law to the Legal Adviser at the U.S. State Department and in August 2021, Professor Cleveland was appointed as Legal Adviser at the U.S. State Department.
