Media Freedom Coalition statement on the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh

Four months following the death of veteran Palestinian-American journalist ShireenAbu Akleh, the undersigned members of the Media Freedom Coalition continue tostrongly condemn her killing in the West Bank and to call for accountability. Freedomof expression, press freedom and the safety of journalists and media workers areindispensable for the flourishing of free, pluralistic, inclusive and democraticsocieties. Shireen Abu Akleh’s death is a tragic loss and an affront to media freedomeverywhere.

We extend our deepest condolences to Shireen Abu Akleh’s family and loved ones. Theuse of force against mourners during her funeral procession was wholly unacceptableand rightly attracted widespread condemnation. Every family deserves to lay their lovedones to rest in a dignified and unimpeded manner.
It is of paramount importance that attacks on members of the media are thoroughlyinvestigated and that those found responsible are held accountable.
The Media Freedom Coalition continues to promote media freedom, a bedrock ofdemocracy and human rights, and to protect the ability of journalists and media workersto carry out their work without fear of violence, intimidation, and threats to their lives orsafety. We call upon all states and other actors to hold to account those who jeopardizethe safety of journalists and media workers.
